About Dr Faraaz de Belder
Dr Faraaz de Belder is a specialist anaesthetist based on the Sunshine Coast. He also holds a Fellowship in General Practice and has worked as a retrieval doctor, flying with LifeFlight and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Few anaesthetists have also worked as GPs and retrieval doctors. Dr de Belder has done both — treating chronic conditions in general practice and providing emergency care by helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft. He brings both perspectives to every patient he assesses: the long-term picture and the acute one.
Philosophy of Care
"Anaesthesia can be a source of anxiety for many patients," Dr de Belder says. "My goal is to explain clearly what will happen and why, so patients understand their care and feel more in control."
He works with patients, surgeons and hospital teams to keep people informed at every stage of their treatment, drawing on his GP background to consider each patient's broader health, not just the procedure in front of him.
Training & Background
Dr de Belder graduated from the University of London in 2012 with two Distinctions, four Merits and a Prize for Academic Excellence.
He trained and worked as a GP in the UK before moving to Queensland, where he continued in general practice. An interest in acute and emergency medicine led him to retrieval work, flying with LifeFlight and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Over more than 500 taskings across helicopter and fixed-wing platforms, he delivered hospital-level care to patients across regional and remote Queensland.
That work led him into anaesthetic training through the Queensland training program, across major teaching hospitals in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, where he developed his expertise in perioperative medicine and anaesthetic technique.
He also holds a Senior Lecturer appointment at Griffith University, teaching medical students and supervising junior doctors.
Qualifications
Dr de Belder holds Fellowships in Anaesthesia and General Practice, along with five postgraduate diplomas spanning geriatric medicine, tropical medicine and pre-hospital and retrieval medicine.
